THE EFFECT OF POLITICAL CRISIS IN NIGERIA
(A CASE STUDY OF EBIRA LAND)
ABSTRACT
This research work examines the Effect of Political Crisis in Nigeria with reference to Ebira land as a case study. The primary objective of the research is to identify the causes of political crisis in Ebira Land. The method of data collection is both primary and secondary sources. The findings, revealed that the main cause of political crisis is political rivalries. The researcher made some recommendations. The first thing is to allow people to belong to the party of their choice since we do not have one party system in Nigeria. Secondly, the youths in Ebira land should be educated on how to eradicate violence and lastly, the elites in Ebira land should organize a peace conference and make sure peace is restored among the people in Ebira land and Nigeria as a whole.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Democracy is a political term used to describe a political system in which the determination of government action is by the majority. Political power and the use of consensus are by the majority. Assumption of power is basically by popular consent (election) as observed by Puke (2003). This implies that, in a democratic society, fair and fundamental human right of the citizens must be safeguarded to a reasonable extent as well as their rights to take part in decision making. But in Nigeria democracy people are mostly denied the above mentioned rights and this has resulted in several political crisis that hinder the country from enjoying the dividend of democracy.
There are various political crisis that Nigeria has recorded which include the General election crisis of 1953, the Kano riot of 1983, Action Group crisis of 1962,-1963 and others as contained in Puke (2003). These crisis and other recent ones left the country in a state of disarray with little or no development.
In Ebira land the persistent political crisis has set back the advancement of all form of growth and development in the land. It is on this note that the researcher is prompted to investigate further on the effect of such political crisis on the Nigerian Democracy with reference to Ebira land and to proffer solutions to the problem.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The tension and sense of insecurity aggravated by political crisis which hand exhibited a negative impact on the development of Ebira land is the focus of this research work.
That is, emphasis will be laid on the major problem of this crisis which of course can be located in the area of mass unemployment, poverty, poor political education, homelessness, sickness, loss of life and properties.
Secondly, the insecurity in business environment prevents business investors from patronizing the area. this problem discourage business activities in the locality and thereby resulting to the under development of the area.
Another problem is that civil servants in the area are prevented from implementing policies that would have contributed to the development of the area as a result of frequent crisis.
In addition, destruction of government properties during crisis discourages the government from providing more infrastructural facilities to the area. further more, the number of orphan and loss of productive youth kept increasing due to frequent political crisis in the area.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Though Democracy is meant to generate participatory governance and cooperative behaviour for the achievement of collective goals, various crisis experienced in various clans have consistently militated against the attainment of these goals.
Politics is supposed to attract development but the one in Ebira land has tended more towards destruction. This is because the political leaders of the area are not capable of handling the problems as they are the root of the problem.
The objectives the researcher hope to achieve in the course of this investigation are:
- To identify the causes of political crisis in Ebira land
- To investigate the effect of the crisis on democratic governance in the area
- To assess the destruction to life and property
- To also point out the socio-economic implication of the crisis on Ebira land
- To investigate the extent of involvement of the youth in the crisis]To also determine the role of politicians in Ebira land in the crisis
- To also determine the role of politicians in Ebira land in the crisis
- Finally, to suggest how the crisis can be peacefully resolved for the benefit of all.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The project is of great importance to the researcher as part of the partial fulfillment of the requirements that need to be fulfilled for the award of HND in Public Administration.
It should be noted that no viable development can be achieved under tension and social insecurity. That is, it is absolutely important to ensure unity, peace, love, and trust to reign so that investors will be attracted to come into utilizing the human and material resources in the area. the study will go a long way to enlighten the general public about political crisis and its aftermath on our democracy. Also, the project work will serve as the researcher’s contribution to Ebira land in resolving the frequent political and other related crisis in the land.
Finally, the project will be of greater help to any individual or group willing to conduct a research in the future on the topic or similar area.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research is limited to The Effect of Political Crisis in Nigeria Democracy specifically in Ebira land.
The study shall cover between 2005-2010 and the research is based on data collected from Okene, Okehi, Adavi and Ajaokuta local government areas.
1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study is however constrained by a number of factors such as lack of adequate time and the inability of people under study to give true information on the subject under study.
1.7 RESEARCH QUESTION
The following research questions shall serve as tentative statement to examine the effect of political crisis on the Nigeria Democracy.
- What are the effects of this crisis on the socio-economic development in Ebira land?
- What are the causes of political crisis in Ebira land?
- What are the possible lasting solutions to these problems?
- How can peace be totally restored to Ebira land?
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms are used from time to time in the research work. For easy understanding of the study, the following operational definition here has been given.
CRISIS: A time of severe difficulty or danger, a time when a difficult or important decision must be taken.
POLITICAL: Relating to the government or public affairs of a country, related to or interested in politics.
POLITICAL CRISIS: This is defined as various contradiction and conflict consequently resulting to disobedient of law and order in a society.
DEMOCRACY: A political system in which the people of a country can vote to elect their representatives.
DISARRAY: A state of disorder or confusion.
AGGRAVATED: Make worse
TENTATIVE: Done without confidence, not certain or fixed
TENSION: The state of being stretched tight, mental or emotional strain
PROFFER: Offer for acceptance
POLICIES: Course of action adopted or proposed by an organization or person
DEVELOPMENT: The action of developing or the state of being developed
ELECTION: A procedure whereby a person is elected, the action of electing or the fact of being elected.
