The Role of Digital Media in Promoting Nigerian Heritage: A Case Study of Cultural Preservation on Instagram

Abstract

This study explores the role of digital media in promoting and preserving Nigerian cultural heritage, with a focus on Instagram as a platform for cultural preservation. Using a quantitative research approach, data were collected from 250 active Instagram users who engage with Nigerian cultural content, including creators, cultural organizations, and followers. The research examines how Instagram’s visual and interactive features are utilized to document, share, and celebrate Nigeria’s diverse traditions, such as music, dance, festivals, crafts, and historical sites. Findings indicate that 78% of respondents believe Instagram significantly contributes to cultural preservation by providing a global stage for showcasing Nigerian heritage. Additionally, 65% of respondents reported increased knowledge of Nigerian traditions through Instagram, while 58% actively participate in discussions or events related to Nigerian culture discovered on the platform. The study identifies key strategies used by cultural influencers and organizations, including storytelling, live streams of cultural events, and interactive campaigns, which engage both local and international audiences. Challenges noted include algorithmic limitations, which reduce content visibility, and the lack of digital literacy among older generations who are custodians of traditional knowledge. Despite these challenges, Instagram serves as a vital tool for bridging generational gaps and fostering pride in Nigerian heritage. The study recommends improved digital training for cultural custodians, strategic collaborations between cultural organizations and tech platforms, and government support to amplify digital preservation efforts.

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Digital media has transformed the ways cultural heritage is preserved, shared, and appreciated. In Nigeria, a country rich in diverse cultures, traditions, and histories, digital platforms such as Instagram are playing an increasingly important role in promoting heritage. Instagram, a visual-centric social media platform, provides an avenue for showcasing cultural artifacts, traditional practices, and historic sites to a global audience (Adeyemi & Onwubu, 2023).

Nigeria’s heritage includes various elements, such as traditional attire, festivals, music, dance, cuisine, and languages. Preserving and promoting these aspects is critical in an age where globalization threatens to erode local cultures (Obinna, 2022). Through Instagram, cultural institutions, influencers, and everyday users document and share images, videos, and narratives that highlight Nigeria’s rich heritage.

The Nigerian government and private stakeholders have increasingly recognized digital media’s potential in cultural preservation. Initiatives such as the National Commission for Museums and Monuments’ online campaigns leverage platforms like Instagram to create awareness about Nigeria’s cultural wealth (Ibrahim, 2021). Similarly, private individuals and organizations use the platform to celebrate traditional crafts, showcase cultural events, and promote tourism.

However, there are challenges. The digital space can sometimes prioritize entertainment over substance, leading to a superficial representation of heritage. Additionally, the digital divide limits access for some communities, particularly in rural areas, restricting their participation in the global conversation about Nigerian culture (Nwafor & Eze, 2020).

This study examines the role of Instagram in promoting Nigerian heritage, analyzing how the platform facilitates cultural preservation and highlighting its benefits and challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The preservation of cultural heritage is a pressing concern in Nigeria, as globalization and modernization continue to erode traditional practices and knowledge. Although digital platforms like Instagram provide opportunities for cultural promotion, there is limited understanding of how effectively they contribute to preserving Nigerian heritage (Adeyemi, 2023).

Many cultural elements remain underrepresented in digital spaces, with most attention focused on popular aspects such as fashion and festivals while neglecting lesser-known traditions and languages. Furthermore, the lack of digital literacy and resources in rural communities limits their ability to showcase their heritage on platforms like Instagram (Ibrahim, 2021).

Moreover, concerns about the commercialization of culture on Instagram have been raised. Some users prioritize monetization over authentic representation, leading to diluted or misrepresented cultural narratives. This commercialization risks reducing Nigeria’s rich heritage to mere entertainment or consumer goods (Obinna, 2022).

Given these challenges, it is crucial to investigate the role of Instagram in cultural preservation, assessing its strengths and limitations in promoting Nigerian heritage.
