The Role of Digital Platforms in Shaping Nigerian Entertainment: A Case Study of Netflix and Nollywood

Abstract:

This study investigates the role of digital platforms in shaping the Nigerian entertainment industry, with a particular focus on the influence of Netflix on Nollywood. Using a quantitative research approach, the study explores how the availability of Nigerian films on global streaming platforms like Netflix has affected the local film industry, consumer viewing habits, and the global reach of Nollywood content. A sample of 120 Nigerian movie viewers, including Netflix subscribers and non-subscribers, was selected through stratified random sampling to ensure a broad demographic representation. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that explored participants’ engagement with Netflix content, their viewing preferences, and their perceptions of Nollywood’s visibility on digital platforms. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analysis to determine the impact of Netflix on the consumption of Nollywood films. The findings reveal that Netflix has significantly contributed to the international exposure of Nollywood films, increasing global visibility for Nigerian filmmakers and attracting international audiences. Furthermore, the study shows that digital platforms have changed viewing habits in Nigeria, with more people opting for on-demand streaming over traditional cinema visits. However, challenges such as the affordability of Netflix subscriptions, limited local content on the platform, and competition with other international entertainment options were also identified. The study concludes that digital platforms, particularly Netflix, have played a transformative role in shaping Nigerian entertainment, offering new opportunities for content distribution and audience expansion, but highlights the need for greater investment in local content and more affordable access to streaming services.

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In recent years, digital platforms have revolutionized the entertainment industry globally, and Nigeria is no exception. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix, the consumption of film and television content has moved from traditional broadcasting methods to online platforms. This shift has had a significant impact on various aspects of the entertainment industry, particularly in countries like Nigeria, where Nollywood (the Nigerian film industry) has long been a dominant cultural force (Akinwale & Abiola, 2020). The advent of digital streaming services has brought both challenges and opportunities to Nollywood, offering new avenues for distribution, audience engagement, and production quality.

Netflix, as one of the world’s leading subscription-based streaming services, has become a key player in global entertainment, including in Nigeria. The platform’s decision to invest in local content production and distribution has provided Nigerian filmmakers with access to a global audience, while also influencing the style and quality of Nollywood productions. Nollywood films and series, once primarily distributed via DVD sales and local television, are now being broadcast on Netflix, attracting both local and international viewers (Bello, 2021). This has led to an increase in visibility for Nigerian filmmakers, with some films achieving global recognition and success.

The impact of digital platforms like Netflix on Nigerian entertainment is multifaceted. These platforms have not only transformed how films are consumed but have also altered the way they are produced, marketed, and distributed. For example, the demand for high-quality content, coupled with Netflix’s global reach, has prompted Nollywood filmmakers to adopt new production techniques, invest in better equipment, and collaborate with international talents. At the same time, the rise of digital platforms has created new opportunities for emerging filmmakers, providing them with a platform to showcase their work to a global audience without the traditional barriers to entry (Okpara & Ogundeji, 2022).

The impact of these digital platforms on Nigerian entertainment, particularly Nollywood, warrants a deeper examination. The study aims to explore how Netflix, as a digital platform, is reshaping Nollywood in terms of content production, distribution, and audience engagement. It will also examine the challenges and opportunities that this digital shift presents for Nigerian filmmakers and the entertainment industry as a whole.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rise of digital platforms such as Netflix has fundamentally altered the entertainment landscape, yet the full implications of this shift on Nigerian entertainment, specifically Nollywood, remain underexplored. While there has been an increasing interest in streaming services, particularly Netflix, and their influence on the global film industry, limited research exists on their specific impact on Nollywood’s production practices, distribution channels, and audience engagement strategies.

Nollywood, which has historically relied on traditional methods of film distribution such as DVD sales and local television, faces both opportunities and challenges in adapting to the digital age. While Netflix provides Nigerian filmmakers with an unprecedented global platform, it also brings new demands in terms of production quality, content originality, and marketing strategies. Furthermore, the impact of Netflix’s subscription model and the resulting shift in audience consumption habits remain unclear.

This study seeks to address these gaps by exploring the role of digital platforms like Netflix in shaping the production, distribution, and consumption of Nollywood films. It aims to understand the challenges and opportunities that Nigerian filmmakers face in the digital era and how this shift is reshaping the entertainment industry in Nigeria.
