The Influence of Social Media on Nigerian Youths’ Political Participation: A Case Study of Twitter Politics
Abstract:
This study examines the influence of social media on Nigerian youths’ political participation, focusing on Twitter as a platform for political engagement and discourse. Using a quantitative research design, the study investigates how Nigerian youths interact with political content on Twitter, their levels of participation in political activities, and the impact of social media on shaping their political views and decisions. A sample of 150 Nigerian youths aged 18-35, selected through stratified random sampling, participated in the study by completing structured questionnaires. The data collected explored participants’ Twitter usage patterns, engagement with political hashtags and campaigns, and the extent to which social media facilitated their involvement in political activities, such as voting, advocacy, and protests. Statistical analysis, including chi-square tests and regression modeling, was employed to evaluate the relationship between Twitter engagement and political participation. The findings reveal that Twitter significantly influences Nigerian youths’ political participation by serving as a platform for political mobilization, information dissemination, and discourse. Popular hashtags such as #EndSARS, #NigeriaDecides, and #FixPolitics were instrumental in galvanizing youth activism and promoting political awareness. Respondents reported that Twitter’s real-time updates, interactive features, and accessibility encouraged them to participate in discussions, share opinions, and take concrete political actions. However, challenges such as misinformation, digital divides, and online harassment were identified as barriers to effective political engagement. The study concludes that social media, particularly Twitter, plays a transformative role in fostering political participation among Nigerian youths. Recommendations include promoting digital literacy to combat misinformation, creating safer online spaces for political discourse, and leveraging social media analytics to design impactful youth-centered political campaigns.
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for political engagement, particularly among youth. In Nigeria, platforms such as Twitter have significantly influenced the political landscape by providing a space for discussions, mobilization, and advocacy. The youth, often characterized as digitally savvy, are leveraging these platforms to engage in political discourse, challenge traditional power structures, and advocate for social change.
Twitter, in particular, has transformed the way political narratives are shaped and disseminated. With its real-time communication and hashtag campaigns, it has become a hub for political activism and participation. Movements such as #EndSARS, #NotTooYoungToRun, and other youth-led initiatives have gained traction through Twitter, demonstrating the platform’s role in amplifying voices and fostering collective action.
The Nigerian youth, who make up a significant portion of the country’s population, have historically faced barriers to political participation, including unemployment, limited access to quality education, and systemic corruption. Social media platforms, however, have provided them with an avenue to circumvent these barriers, engage directly with political leaders, and influence policy decisions.
Despite its potential, the use of Twitter for political participation is not without challenges. Issues such as the spread of fake news, cyberbullying, and the digital divide hinder the platform’s effectiveness. Moreover, the government’s periodic attempts to regulate social media, including the temporary suspension of Twitter in Nigeria in 2021, highlight the tension between freedom of expression and state control.
This study explores the influence of social media, particularly Twitter, on Nigerian youths’ political participation. It examines how the platform has enabled political engagement, the challenges faced by users, and the broader implications for democracy and governance in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth political participation in Nigeria has historically been low, despite their demographic dominance. Conventional barriers such as poverty, lack of education, and political marginalization have contributed to this trend. However, the advent of social media has presented a new avenue for engagement.
While platforms like Twitter have enabled youths to voice their opinions and advocate for change, their effectiveness in translating online activism into tangible political outcomes remains questionable. For instance, while movements like #EndSARS gained significant online traction, the long-term political impact of such campaigns is still debated.
Furthermore, the spread of misinformation and the prevalence of online harassment discourage constructive political discourse. The digital divide also excludes rural and economically disadvantaged youths from participating in these online spaces, creating an uneven landscape of political engagement.
There is also limited academic exploration of how social media influences youth political behavior in Nigeria, particularly in the context of Twitter. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the opportunities and challenges of Twitter politics in fostering youth participation in Nigeria.
