IDENTITY THEFT AND FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES: A STUDY OF NASARAWA STATE BANKING SECTORS

ABSTRACT

This study investigates identity theft and fraudulent activities within the banking sector of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Identity theft and fraud have become critical concerns for financial institutions globally, and this research aims to explore their prevalence, impact, and the effectiveness of existing anti-fraud measures within the context of Nasarawa State. Utilizing a quantitative research approach, the study employed a structured questionnaire with 10 closed-ended questions, targeting bank employees and customers to gather data on various aspects of identity theft and fraud. The findings indicate that identity theft and fraudulent activities, such as account takeover, credit/debit card fraud, phishing scams, and ATM skimming, are prevalent in Nasarawa State’s banking sector. These activities are reported to occur frequently and have significant negative impacts on both the financial stability of banks and customer trust. The study further reveals that while several anti-fraud measures are currently in place, including two-factor authentication and biometric verification, their effectiveness is perceived as moderate. Key challenges identified include inadequate technology, insufficient staff training, and a lack of customer awareness. Based on the findings, the study recommends enhancing technological security systems, improving staff training, increasing customer education, and strengthening regulatory oversight. Regular updates to anti-fraud measures are also advised to address the evolving nature of fraud. These recommendations aim to bolster the resilience of the banking sector in Nasarawa State against identity theft and fraud, ensuring greater security and trust within the financial system.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Identity theft and fraudulent activities are significant issues affecting the banking sector globally. These crimes involve the illegal acquisition and misuse of personal information, leading to financial losses and reputational damage for financial institutions and their customers (Smith & Smith, 2021). In Nigeria, these problems have become increasingly prevalent, with various reports indicating a rise in cases of fraud and identity theft in recent years (Bankole, 2020).

Nasarawa State, located in central Nigeria, is not exempt from these challenges. The state’s banking sector has experienced incidents of fraud and identity theft that have impacted both banks and their clients (Oluwaseun, 2022). The growth of digital banking services and the increasing use of electronic transactions have provided more opportunities for fraudsters to exploit vulnerabilities within the banking system (Akinwande, 2023).

Several factors contribute to the prevalence of these issues, including inadequate cybersecurity measures, lack of awareness among customers, and insufficient regulatory oversight (Adegboye, 2021). Despite the efforts of banks to implement advanced security measures, the sophistication of fraudulent techniques continues to evolve, posing a persistent threat to the integrity of financial institutions (Eze & Obi, 2022).

The Nigerian banking sector has undertaken various initiatives to combat fraud and identity theft, such as deploying sophisticated fraud detection systems and enhancing staff training (Okoye, 2023). However, the effectiveness of these measures in the context of Nasarawa State remains underexplored. Understanding the specific challenges faced by banks in this region and the effectiveness of their anti-fraud measures is crucial for developing targeted solutions.

In this study, a comprehensive examination of identity theft and fraudulent activities within Nasarawa State’s banking sector will be conducted. This will involve assessing the prevalence of these issues, evaluating their impact on banks and customers, and identifying the effectiveness of current preventive measures.

The research aims to provide valuable insights into the dynamics of fraud and identity theft in the state, contributing to the development of more effective strategies for combating these crimes. By focusing on Nasarawa State, this study will address a significant gap in the existing literature and offer practical recommendations for improving fraud prevention and response mechanisms.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Identity theft and fraudulent activities pose significant challenges to the banking sector in Nasarawa State, leading to substantial financial losses and reputational damage for banks and their customers. Despite the implementation of various security measures, the frequency and sophistication of these crimes have increased, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of their impact and the effectiveness of current preventive strategies (Adegboye, 2021).

The problem is compounded by the rapid adoption of digital banking services, which, while offering convenience, also expose banks and customers to new vulnerabilities (Akinwande, 2023). The lack of comprehensive studies focusing on Nasarawa State means that specific regional challenges and the effectiveness of localized anti-fraud measures remain inadequately addressed (Oluwaseun, 2022).

Understanding the nature and extent of identity theft and fraud in Nasarawa State’s banking sector is essential for developing targeted strategies to mitigate these issues. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a detailed analysis of the current state of fraud and identity theft in the region, evaluating the impact on stakeholders, and assessing the efficacy of existing preventive measures.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the common types of identity theft and fraudulent activities occurring in Nasarawa State’s banking sector.
  2. To assess the impact of these fraudulent activities on banks and their customers in Nasarawa State.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current anti-fraud measures implemented by banks in Nasarawa State.
  4. To explore the challenges faced by banks in combating identity theft and fraud.
  5. To provide recommendations for improving fraud prevention and response strategies in the banking sector.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the common types of identity theft and fraudulent activities reported in Nasarawa State’s banking sector?
  2. How do these fraudulent activities impact banks and their customers in Nasarawa State?
  3. What are the current anti-fraud measures employed by banks in Nasarawa State, and how effective are they?
  4. What challenges do banks face in preventing and addressing identity theft and fraud?
  5. What recommendations can be made to enhance fraud prevention and response strategies in Nasarawa State’s banking sector?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the specific challenges related to identity theft and fraudulent activities within Nasarawa State’s banking sector. By focusing on this region, the study addresses a critical gap in the existing literature and contributes to a better understanding of local issues related to financial fraud (Adegboye, 2021).

The findings of this research will be valuable for banks in Nasarawa State, as they will help in identifying weaknesses in current security measures and developing more effective strategies to combat identity theft and fraud. Additionally, the study will benefit customers by highlighting potential risks and promoting awareness about protecting personal information (Akinwande, 2023).

Furthermore, the research will provide policymakers and regulatory bodies with evidence-based recommendations for enhancing regulatory frameworks and implementing targeted interventions to address the rising trend of fraudulent activities in the banking sector (Okoye, 2023).

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses on identity theft and fraudulent activities within the banking sector in Nasarawa State. It will cover various types of fraud, including but not limited to online banking fraud, card fraud, and identity theft related to loan applications. The research will primarily involve commercial banks operating in the state.

The study will be delimited to the banking sector and will not include other financial institutions such as microfinance banks or insurance companies. Additionally, the research will concentrate on the perspectives of bank employees and customers within Nasarawa State, excluding other stakeholders such as law enforcement agencies.

Due to time and resource constraints, the study will rely on data collected through surveys and interviews, which may not capture all instances of fraud or the full range of experiences among all stakeholders. The findings will thus be limited to the experiences and perceptions of the sample population.
