EFFECT OF COMMUNICATION GUIDE ON GOOD DECISION MAKING IN AN ORGANIZATION

(A Case Study of Eco Bank Main Branch Abuja)

ABSTRACT

There is no organization that is exceptional as far as communication is concerned; it is also through effective communication that the organization mission and policies are used in making effective decision. Therefore the research is aimed at investigating specially the communication system operation in an organization and emphasizes its importance and also the importance of effective communication as a guide to a good decision making in an organization. The main source of data collection is the primary source, questionnaire and personal interviews used in getting some relevant data that can be of help during the course of the research. Chi-square method was adopted in analyzing the data collected, the researcher also used many view to present the data in a tabular form and test the hypothesis. In researcher find out that effective communication policies leads to good decision-making in order for the organization to achieve its mission statement that effective communication provides a suitable means for tackling the problem that may rise as well as determining if there is problem at all. It is recommended that the company should endeavour to employ competent hands who are not all that educated but literate and of high intelligent. Finally the bank should endeavor to embark on research on how to improve its communication on techniques and methods, especially in the use of telephone, Internet, NIPOST, radio messages.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

For any meaningful progress to be made or achieved by management of any organization there must be an effective flow of communication.

Communication provides the avenue of communicating organizational policies, missions, goals and objectives as well as getting feedback and relevant information from internal and external environment respectively.

Communication however does not take place in vaccum, the existence of communication agencies such as NITEL, RADIO, NIPOST, etc. underscores its importance of providing services, supply of social needs to implement plans, strategies and policies, yet organizations exert enormous amount of available resources to get those accomplished effectively.

However, the management process, the performance of management or the management functions of planning organization, directing and controlling are carried out through decision-making. Thus, managerial decision-making involves a conscious choice through which a manager comes to a conclusion and selects a particular course of action.

In essence, it must be noted that virtually all organizations spends a reasonable amount of resources in communicating and also taking decision. Therefore, there is no how an organization can communicate without taking decision on what to communicate and there is no how it can take decision without communicating; therefore, communication and decision-making are inseparable for effective and efficient operation or organizational activities in order to achieve their aims and objectives.

To this end effective communication serves as a guide to good decision-making in any organization.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Here, barriers to effective communication are highlighted, these are factors that present effective sending and receiving of information towards corporate decision in an organization.

LACK OF SOUND OBJECTIVES

This is a situation whereby organization objectives are not well spelt world words, which are league impressive, omitting, necessary information, constitute barrier to an effective communication in an organization. 

FAULTY IN MANAGERIAL ORGANIZATION

This is where there is no clear chain of command and too will span of control in an organization where there is no clear out definition for channeling information from the top management level to the lower management level, which constitutes barriers to the flow of communication as well as posing problem to corporate decision.

USE OF TECHNICAL JARGONS

This could come as a result of differences in educational and social background of the recipient, which may into guaranteed an effective hinder standing each department operators in specialized area because out offers specialize service language which is only jargons to other departments.

Other problems include noise and perspective which affects the fidelity of affective commensuration in order for an organization to make good decisions.

1.3     OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objective of the study is to find out effect of communication on decision-making in an organization.

  1. To investigate specially the communication system operation in an organization and emphasizes its importance.
  2. To determine or examine various problems are militating against effective communication and decision-making at different level of management in an organization.
  3. To investigate the possible strategies for effective communication.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research work is expected to be of immense importance to the following bodies in knowing the positive impact of the said communication system in an organization.

The study would be used in various ways such as aiding the reappraising the functions of communication, not only in Eco Bank of Nigeria LTD. But also on both public and private corporate organizations where it is assumed that communication has been given it due role.

The study would also assist in determining to a large extent, the effectiveness of good communication in the decision-making process and its influences on the achievement of organizational goals.

1.5     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

For the purpose of this project, the scope would therefore be limited to organizational communication and decision-making in Eco Bank Nigeria LTD, FCT Abuja and centered round operational and marketing departments.

This is to study the areas in which, departments take decisions on operation and how organizational policies and feed backs are communicated and it is also to study how these department allow when there is problem within the organization or when there is a discrepancy between the set goal and the actual or acquired goal or should there be domination from the set standard, how they can communicate, who takes decision, on what the decision be taken. How decisions are reached whenever the need arises as well as the relationship that exist within the organization.

1.6     RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

In carrying out the research study, the below hypothesis unformulated:

HO:    Effective communication is not a guide to a good decision making in an organization.

Hi:     Effective communication is a guide to good decision-making in an organization.

1.7     RESEARCH QUESTION

  1. What are the communication system operation in an organization and its importance?
  2. What are the problems militating against effective communication and decision-making at different level of management in an organization?
  3. What are the strategies for effective communication?

1.8     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

To conduct a research work is not an easy task. The researcher has to encounter one problem or the other. The researcher faced some problems in the course of carrying out the exercise among the major problems faced including the following:

For fear of relapsing the data to be collected to other organizations or competitors, hence some respondents refused to relapse some absolutely essential information.

  1. Consideration of the high cost of transportation, financial constraints or limitations also plays its role.
  2. Also considering the long distance from the polytechnic campus of the Eco Bank F.C.T Abuja the tight academic schedule and the time limit of the researcher, much could not be achieved.

1.9     DEFINITION OF TERMS

1.       Communication: This could be defined “as a process involving the passing of message through the use of symbols which all parties in the communication encounter” James E-tal (1990).

2.       Sender/Encoder: This refers to how the sender decides on the appropriate codes and modes of conveying his message. Bedian and Gluck (1983).

3.       Message: Message simply means the information being exchange. It is the content of the communication process. Wale Akjayi and Victor Idakwo (1996).

4.       Organization: This is defined as a group of people who form a business etc. together in order to achieve a particular aim. Homby A. Sed (2001) Oxford advance Lerner’s dictionary.

5.       Transmission: It is also known as the medium, it is “the actual transportation of the senders” message to the receiver Bedin and Gluck (1983).

6.       Receiver/Decoder: This is “the person to whom the ion is targeted. He received the information” Wale Ajayi Iridlawa (1996).

7.       Feedback: This means “the reply of the message from the receiver to the sender. It confirms whether an intended sage has reached its destination or not”. Ahmed Wanda (2002).

8.       Noise: This is a technical term referring to an unwanted element or interference in the processing of information. Jarres Etal (1990).

9.       Decision: It means “a conclusion reached at towards solving a prevailing problem”. Titus Okey Enuclo (1990)
