COMMUNITY DIAGNOSIS:
A CASE STUDY OF OVERSEA COMMUNITY WATER BOARD DEVELOPMENT AREA NASARAWA STATE
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to identify the health needs of oversea community, the need could be known by the community themselve (i.e. felt need) or it could be identified by the health team during their diagnosis (i.e. identify need), it hel the community to solve some of their problem such as access road, refuse disposal, sewage disposal, lack of health facility, lack of good water supply using identified resources and also enhance in traction between the community and health workers. It will help them to provide a basis for conducting health planning of the community that has already been diagnosed.
INTRODUCTION
Community diagnosis is a process of identifying health needs, want, problems and constraint of the community, the need could be known bybthe community and also identified by community health workers during the process of community diagnosis.
The community diagnosis enable students to assess community health problem and give appropriate advice or solution to some of their problem by telling them about environmental sanitation, good water supply, sewage disposal, nutritional status, treatment of minor illness and referral of ill patient to the appropriate hospital.
OVERSEA COMMUNITY
Oversea community is a large community located at northern part of Nasarawa Water Board in Nasarawa Local Government area of Nasarawa state. It has large population of people both residential houses and and non-residential houses such as schools, churches and mosque.
Oversea has only one government primary school, no primary health care centre (PHCC) and one center mosque.
Prior to the community diagnosis the community head was visited and his consent was soughted.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
- The purpose of this study is to provide a solid base for making plans to solve identified health problem / needs.
- To identify the community resources
- To identify the constraint which prevent community development.
- To enhance interaction between the community and the health workers.
- To provide realistic information about the community.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
- Community: A community is a group of people living within a specified geographical area.
- Health: Is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being of an individual not merely in absent of disease or infirmity.
- Diagnosis: Is a processd of identifying the nature of a problem e.g. illness (Oxford Dictionary).
- Felt Need: It is a need that the community has already known.
- Identified Need: These are the need that was identified by the health worker to the community.
- Interview: Is a meeting between two people to discuss important mater (Oxford Dictionary).
- Observation: Is a process of watching carefully so as to notice things.
METHODOLOGY / STEP USED

OBSERVATION: – This involve careful watchfullness of an event in a given geographical area.
We observed that in some part of the community they don’t have environment sanitation, lack enough equipment in their health facility, lack of refuse disposer, and no electricity.
INTERVIEW: – Is meeting between two people to discuss an important issue.
We interview them by asking question like:
- Do this community have health facility? – The responded No
- Do this community have refuse disposal? -They responded Yes
- Do this community have a day of environmental sanitation? -They responded Yes
- Do they have portable water supply? -They responded Yes.
FINDING
- Lack of electricity
- Lack of environmental sanitation
- Lack of portable water supply
- Lack of access road
SUMMARY
It is said that health is wealth. Therefore good environmental sanitation, good water supply, good refuse disposal, personal hygien etc. will enhance their healthy living. So adequate attention should be give to those areas.
Community diagnosis mentioned earlier is just to identify the health needs of community and provide solution for it.
RECOMMENDATION
- I recommend that government should create gutter for the community
- I recommend that government should provide enough equipment in their health facility
- I recommend that government should improve the distribution more long lasting treated mosquito net to prevent them from malaria.
CONCLUSION
Oversea development area is a community over population, stagnant water, constant malaria. It is a community that some people don’t care for their environment.
