THE EFFECT OF LEADERSHIP STYLE ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC ORGANIZATION
(A CASE STUDY OF NIGERIAN AGRICULTURAL INSURANCE COOPERATION (NAIC), ABUJA)
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to examine or evaluate the effect of leadership style on employee performance in public organization. It is a known fact, that effective leadership style in an organisation as a whole depend on the leadership style employed by the organization. The objective of the study is to determine the concept, contribution and understand what kind of leadership style is appropriate in an organization and also to know if leadership in an organization have effect on employee performance in public organization.the study therefore adopted the chi-square method of analysis. Based on research findings: it is suggested that it is necessary to have effective leadership style towards achievement of organizational goals and to increase relationship between management and workers.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The study is designed with respect to the effect of leadership style on employee performance in public organization with a particular reference case study on Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC), Abuja.
The organization needs the best leadership style to enhance the performance of the employee, leadership style is one of the vital instrument used in any organization. Poor performance in any organization may not enable the organization to achieve its objectives, if not properly organized.
This research project will look at the function, role of leadership style on organization performance further, it employ some of the research design method which is enhanced by the use of questionnaires administered.
The major findings of this research work are that; staffs need motivation, training and incentive in order to improve their performance. They also need to develop themselves through training and development; while the study recommendation that every organization should try to adopt the system of democratic leadership style for the purpose of organizational goals and objectives. This study is in the interest of how effect the leadership style on employee performance in public organization under the case study of Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) Abuja.
The area covered on this research is; an effect of leadership style on employee performance in public organization cover in Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) Abuja as a case study. The subject is intended to identify the best leadership style in the organization that the organization must adopt in the discharge of their responsibilities, it also expose the strengths and weakness of the various leadership styles in an organization, at which will enable leaders at various levels to be more effective, focused and skilful.
Leadership in organization is very complex at various levels, leading to the execution of the organization’s programme and the achievement of goals and objectives.
It is generally believed that all over the world, leadership is held responsible for the coordination of all the resources of the organization, which apply not only to government agencies, but also to the military, economic, social, religious and political organization too. Leadership is believed to be the foremost on which every organization is credited or discredited to it; the leadership style and performance are situation, they are also a function of manager or director, chairman to acquire equalities of individual leader who rules by applying its style.
1.2Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The issue of leadership style in an organization is very key to achieving organizational goal and objectives. Over times, it has been discovered that the nature of the organization and the staff formation depends on the leadership style to adopt. The performance of employee, its productivity and general contribution to the attainment of goals can be very low or inadequate; this is not because such employee is in experienced but the nature of the leader with whom such employee is assigned duties. An autocratic leader finds it difficult to motivate and correct employee and such lead that is democratic is fairly and just. This study is birth to address the problems such as unlisted:
(i)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Is there really a problem with leadership?
(ii)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â How do you decide?
(iii)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â If you decide that there is any present problem, how do you manage to keep a greater percentage of the new leadership style on the jobs?
1.3Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The aim of this study is to examine or evaluate; an effect of leadership style on employee performance in public organization of Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation under federal ministry of Agriculture.
It is a known fact that effective leadership style in an organization as a whole depends on the leadership style employed by the organization.
The objectives or purpose of the study is to:
1Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â To determine the concept of an effect of leadership style on employee performance in public organization.
2Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â To explain leadership style of the organization and what affects it has on employee performance.
3Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â To examine the contribution of workers/staff in the organization.
4Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â To understand what kind of leadership style is appropriate in organization.
1.4Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â HYPOTHESIS
Hypothesis can be defined as a conditional statement relating to the effect of one variable to another that can be subjected to testing.Bather (1994). It is a provisional statement of the researcher concerning the relationship of the variables under investigation.
The related hypothesis is as follows:
Hi:there is no significant effect of leadership style on employee performance.
Ho:there is no significant effect of leadership style on employee performance.
1.5Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study is on Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) Abuja.
It must be stressed that even though Nigeria Agricultural Insurance corporation (NAIC), Abuja has been in existence since 1987, out study was concentrated on recent happening that is 2012/2013 on which data are sufficiently available.
Lastly, this study makes use of different division in leadership style in Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation, because it contributes to the leadership style in the organization.
1.6Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
Based on this study the researcher limited on the following factors;
Ø   Time: time was too short for the project work to be done by the researcher due to academic strike; after returning from the strike there was no much time to further on the research as the examination time table was out immediately.
Ø   Insecurity: as insurgency in the country particularly issue of Boko Haram in Nigeria has restricted movement on many places, the researcher was able to concentrate on head office of (NAIC), Abuja.
Ø   Transportation: due to insecurity the transporters are not willing to move to every part of the country like Keffi route.
1.7Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â DEFINITION OF TERMS
·                   Autocratic leader: leader who centralised power and decision making subordinate are instructed on what to do.
·                   Democratic leader: the democratic leader is said to be participative and employee – cantered. Leaders who decentralize powers and authority; by taking decision with employees in form of participation, employees and the leaders who work as a social group of workers.
·                   Effects: a change or result, the way in which an event, an action or person changes someone or something.
·                   Free-rein leadership: sometimes it allows the employee or group to establish its own goals and workout its own problem.
·                   Incentives:characteristically are regarded as object of condition or stimuli external to the organization.
·                   Leadership: is a process of influencing others to work willingly towards organization goals with confidence and keenness.
·                   Leadership style: refers to the leaders’ manner of acting in a work situation.
·                   Motivation: Any direct or indirect, positive or negative inducement, influence, suggestion or other stimuli that can mobilize and the attitude and behaviour of an individual group towards the accomplishment of some specific goals.
·                   Participative leaders decentralize authority by taking decision with employees in term of participation.
·                   Productivity:is the relationship between input and output of goals and services.
·                   Quality:a good leader is one who is able to motivate his followers or subordinates to put forth their best by learning what motivates them and using the knowledge to direct their activities.
1.8Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is timely to Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC), Abuja. This had been left over the years with problem of leadership style in the organization like the autocratic leadership style; furthermore the study will provide the basis for other researcher who wishes to undertake on the effect of good leadership style on employee.
