EFFECT OF SOCIAL VICES AMONG STUDENTS IN NIGERIA POLYTECHNICS

(A STUDY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC NASARAWA)

ABSTRACT

The study focus on the causes of social vices and their effects on student ‘s performance using Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa as (A Case Study), the research adopted a survey design with a population of one hundred and forty (140) Information managers. The method of gathering data was a structured questionnaire and a simple mean was used in analyzing data obtained, the findings revealed the following among others. Indecent dressing, peer pressure, negligence of the parent and broken homes causes social vices in Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa, Student who are involve in social vices are mostly expelled from school, illness which affects students reading ability, increases starvation which leads to poverty, students involve in social vices are often absents of the class and untimely death to students are the effect of social vice on students performance, it is therefore recommended that. The evil nature of social vices should he explained to young people in schools at all levels through sensitization, seminars, workshops, symposium, posters, handbills and public lectures. Religious and moral instructions and education should be re-introduced in all spheres of lives and the decadent society should be spiritually reawakened by joint effort of parents, religious organizations and government.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of the Study

Vices are forms of evil, wicked and criminal actions or behaviors in the society. Vices are social problems and have been thought of as social situations that a large number of observers feel are inappropriate and need remedying. Vices are those acts and conditions that violate societal/institutional norms and values Kalu (2019). Using what was presumed as the universal criteria for “normality”, sociologists commonly assumed that social “pathology” was the consequence of “bad” people. Social problems resulted from the actions of maladjusted people who were abnormal because of mental deficiency, mental disorder, lack of education or incomplete socialization.

These “social pathologists” assumed that the basic norms of society are universally held. In this absolutist view, social problems are behaviours or social arrangements that disturb the moral order Eitzen ( 2012). Nigerian society is a highly dynamic one. The dynamism gives rise to new issues of public interest. It also generated new problems and pose daunting challenges for which the society and its people cannot  overlook, if there is any issue that is most pressing in the minds of people as far as education is concerned today, it is that pertaining to the quality or standard of education. Critics point out that policy-makers and planners are more concerned with the number educated or number graduating rather than with quality of graduates. According to Fadipe and Oluchukwu (2021), qualitative aspect of education should be viewed as a living and moving thing whose goodness resides not only in its excellence relative to certain standards but in its excellence and fitness to the changing needs of the particular students and the society it is intended to serve.

Qualitative education should therefore lead to detectable gains in knowledge, skills and values. There are, however, several students’ vices that seem to be militating against realization of the desired qualitative education in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Some of the common ones (vices) include cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, obscene dressing, and sexual promiscuity/harassment. The remaining part of this paper examines each of these vices and the possible social and academic implications in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Suggestions on ways to curb these menaces are also made.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

Social vices in our Institutions and our societies has left much to be desired. Many of our youths are drop-outs, street boys and girls, have been maimed and many have even lost their lives thereby leaving parents and loved ones in perpetual agony Omale (2019). Members of the public, cultists, themselves, prostitutes, smokers and other involved in other forms of social vices attribute this to ignorance, to greed, parental upbringing etc. The researcher is therefore interested to find out what leads young people to these cult groups and how it affects their academic achievement.

1.3       Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effects of social vices

This study is guided by the following objectives.

1. To find out the causes of social vices among undergraduate in Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa.
2. To ascertain the reasons University undergraduates are been engaged in Social vices.
3. To find out the extent of which business education has positively influence the of mindset undergraduate in Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa
4.  To identify some of the measures on how to curb Social Vices among students of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa

1.5       Research Questions

1. Accordingly, this study seeks to address the following questions: What are the causes of social vices among University undergraduate Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa?
2. Why do Polytechnic undergraduates are been engaged in Social vices?
3.  To what extent does business education have positive influence the in mindset of polytechnic students in Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa?
4. What are the measures for curbing Social Vices among students of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa?

1.4       Significance of the study

The findings of the study will have great significance in that it makes students understand effects of social vices on their academic performance. Specifically; the finding of this study will establish confidence of parents, Guidance, Polytechnic Counseling unit on strategies for correcting societal ills; The finding of this study will enable policy makers to see the need for giving adequate support for the teaching and learning of in polytechnics 

To the academics, this work will provide a basis for further research works.

1.6       Delimitation of the study (Scope of the Study)

This study was limited to only Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa.

1.7       Operational definition of Terms

Effect: A change or result that is caused by an action, event, or circumstance. In this context, it refers to the outcomes or consequences of social vices among students.

Social Vices: Negative and harmful behaviors that go against societal norms and values. These behaviors can include activities such as drug abuse, violence, vandalism, cheating, bullying, and other forms of misconduct.

Students: Individuals who are enrolled in an educational institution for learning and skill development. In this study, the term specifically refers to the students of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa.

Nigeria Polytechnics: Institutions of higher education in Nigeria that offer practical-oriented training in various technical and vocational fields. Polytechnics focus on equipping students with skills that are directly applicable to the workforce.

Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa: An educational institution in Nasarawa, Nigeria, that provides technical and vocational education to students. It serves as the focus of the study.

Effect of Social Vices: The observable outcomes and impacts resulting from the engagement of students in negative behaviors and actions that contravene societal norms.

Social Impact: Refers to the influence or consequences that various actions, behaviors, or occurrences have on the broader societal fabric and well-being.

Consequences: The results or effects that arise from specific actions or events. In this context, it pertains to the outcomes stemming from social vices among students.

Educational Environment: The surroundings, conditions, and atmosphere within an educational institution that shape the learning experiences and behaviors of students.

Behavioral Patterns: Consistent ways in which individuals act or react in various situations. This term relates to the repetitive nature of certain behaviors associated with social vices.

Causation: A cause-and-effect relationship where one variable directly influences the occurrence of another variable.

Intervention Strategies: Planned actions and measures implemented to address and mitigate negative issues or behaviors, in this case, social vices among students.
